Unified Theme : Sorrow of Powerlessness
This website covers 12 short stories, "Loverboys," "Sufficing," "The Red Convertible," "The Buddies," "Big Meeting," "In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd," "Everything That Rises Must Converge," "The Hammon and the Beans," "Defender of the Faith," "Nineteen Fifty-five," "Blue Winds Dancing," "The Man Who Was Almost a Man," and "Seventeen Syllable," which are contained in Unit One, Unit Two, and Unit Three.
All of these stories have a unified theme in that characters of the stories feel the sorrow of powerlessness in American society as they are variously a non-heterosexual person, an immigrant, a laborer, a black person, a Native American, or another vulnerable member of the community. This website will explore what factors make all characters of the above stories feel the sorrow of powerlessness and what makes them undergo conflicts as they exist in the American majority society. Furthermore, it will explore Ethnic Americans' own way of resolving conflicts and overcoming the sorrow of powerlessness.
